The food is excellent, the service is eh...I chalk it up to cultural differences and don't mind it much because it's not like they are rude, just not friendly. I see lots of complaints about the potion sizes and granted, they are small but the quality is pretty darn good. Chicken Tikka Kebab is really good along with the Samosas.

I had the chicken tikka kebab, which came with rice. Others in my group had combo dishes of various meats with rice. The chicken tikka was not dry at all, and had enough seasoning. Service was good too!

I used to go to another Afghan place close by which I considered to be fancier or better quality. But Choopan has really stepped up their game in the last few years. They are the best Afghan restaurant in Hicksville. The quality of their meats is excellent and the service is wonderful. We use them all the time for catering too!

Choopan Grill is one of the few restaurants that I go to that has yet to disappoint. Every time I go, the service is always great with friendly staff and waiters. They cater to your needs and will check to make sure you're enjoying the food. The rice is extremely tasty and the white sauce is great with anything. I would be confident in saying that anything on the menu would be good even though I have not tried everything. This is a great place to eat in or take out, especially for the fair prices. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants quality afghan food.

I really enjoyed the dine-in meal at choopan grill, although it's not neccesarily the fastest service, the food quality definately compensates for that. I went with a couple of my family members that were in town and we got the party of 8 meal which comes with 4 or 5 different kinds of meat (kabob, chicken breast, lamb chops, kofta) and you can mix and match. The white sauce they provide with the meal is a tad bit salty, but has really good white sauce flavor. The rice here is hands down the best cooked middle eastern style rice I've ever had.

Delicious Afghani food and beautiful decor inside. I like the kofta kabab platter it's delicious and cooked to perfection

This place used to be amazing but for some reason the quality and quantity of the food decreased. If I'm gonna pay $12+ for rice and kabobs, give me the amount served for an adult. Not for a child. There are other Afghan restaurants in Queens that ask for half the amount and give you so much food that you need to put it away for the next day. The only good thing is they do have a back area for any parties for any Afghan that wants to do a celebration. Other than that, this place isn't as great as it used to be. I really hope it changes back around asap.

This place is amazing! Def coming back! I had the combination #3. Absolutely love the lamp chops, it's just right. And let me tell you about the chicken curry. It melts in my mouth! Best curry! Their white sauce is to die for! We had a such lovely waiter! He gave us free deserts and green tea to try out. Everything I had was banging

Absolutely delicious! I came for lunch at about 11:20 and the person at the counter seemed surprised to see me. I said that i thought they opened for lunch at 11 and he said that they were "running a bit late". I was the only customer for quite a while. My initial concerns were quickly set aside when i tasted the pumpkin Bolani! To die for - crispy, hot, with a very tasty pumpkin filling. There were two pieces and i could have eaten two more. I ordered the beef kabobs with rice and salad. The rice was moist snd flavorful as were the kabobs. I ate every morsel! I spoke with the host about people i knew from Afghanistan and their wonderful hospitality and how much I enjoyed the food. Along with my bill, he brought me a complimentary dessert -custard with coconut and ground pistachios. It, too, was very delicious. I will be in the area until next Monday and will make a point to return fir dinner before i leave.

Went here once for dinner. Ordered an okra curry with rice. Honestly it was okay. They give an enormous portion of rice and the curry was bland. I don't think I would go here again unless I was craving lots of rice. I wouldn't really recommend this spot to anyone. At least not vegetarians as there aren't any tasty options.

When I'm craving Afghani food, this is my go to spot! Chicken tikka is some of the best I've ever had. Spotty service, decent prices.

Place is nice and clean food was great I ordered the lamb tikka and the chicken kabob you get a good portion. The service was ok but needs a little more work, not that they were rude or anything but they were trying.

Amazing food. The kebabs are on point. We went for a friends birthday and it was amazing. Great seating and service. Even gave us extra rice for free. Yum!

I previously gave Kabab King (Hicksville) a 4 star rating purely on the quality of its food and ignoring the terrible service. If that is my standard for Afghan restaurants, then Choopan needs 6 or 7 stars. The food was fantastic. Better than Kabab King (which I'll use as a base). The rice was tasty and not oily (as KK's is), and the actual kebabs were succulent and well cooked. The only caveat I'll add is that you need to tell the waiter that you want your lamb chops cooked medium if you want medium. The default seems to be well done. My 7 yo daughter, who is not keen on new foods even loved the place. The service was excellent and responsive. I will be back. Many times, If I had to guess.

Love the food here! I always get this sautéed eggplant appetizer and usually a chicken kebob with rice. Great for take out . The staff isn't the friendliest but I'm not complaining as long as the food stays delicious :)

  • Sara C.

Everything was absolutely delicious and the rice and chicken was amazing. The chicken tikka was delicious and you get so much for such a good price. It wasn't crowded and the service is good. I would definitely recommend this place. It's a wonder how I've never gone here before. It's a must go.

  • Sanna R.

Ive been coming here for years. The portions are better from before. The qabuli rice with lamb shank is great and id say the same about bargh kabab. The chicken is a bit dry. The service has improved over the years, but still needs to be bettered. The decor is a bit old now and in the winter its cold inside so make sure to keep your jackets on.

Came here with a group as we were craving afghani food. From the beginning the waitress and guy behind the counter were rude. Ordered the mantoo, the sauce was good but I have had better, the meat inside was very dry. My afghani friend asked if the kebabs were fresh or frozen and the waitress rolled her eyes and said frozen. 5 minutes later she takes a bite out of the kebab and there is a long black hair rolled into the kebab and in my friends mouth. We called the waitress over right away and she asked if it was our hair, and what did she want us to do? ARE you KIDDING me. Theres so many better afghani places long island than this dump.

  • Roseann B.

Our absolute go to place for amazing Afghani food. Everything is super fresh, the people who work there are SO nice. Their mantoo is so good. I never tried it until we started coming here. Their white sauce is also to die for. If you want great Afghani, check out Choopan!

Love this place. Food is always fresh and tastes so good. Meat is always tender and staff is friendly. Clean ambiance

One of the better afgani restaurants in the area. Delicious chicken and lamb plates with reasonable prices. Definitely recommended.

This place is amazing! They catered my engagement party and wedding of well over 300 people. The food is exceptional and authentic! You won't go wrong trying this place it will quickly be your favorite

  • Farooq A.

One of the best places for Afghani food! Been going here for almost 10 years and they've never let us down. Can never go wrong with the chicken tikka!

This is the best Afghan restaurant in the area. Great kebabs. Be sure to order the sauteed eggplant appetizer--amazing!

  • Daanyaal K.

This place has changed very little over the years. The decor went from round tables to booths around the restaurant. Food quality/quantity has gone down especially the chicken within the past 5 years. The menu is still affordable ranging from $10-$16 for grill combo entrees. This place can get very busy on the weekend which effects the service. I wouldn't call this the best Afghan restaurant in New York but it is definitely a must visit as it is a great entry to the countries food.

    (4)
  • Amador A.

Its just ok here. Portions are small and the meat wasn't as moist as some of the competitors in the area. Service is good but doesn't have the homey feel like again some other places in the area. Prices are good and menu is big. I don't think I will be back again.

Best afghani food on LI. Try the Lamb Curry with rice and vegetarian samosa. So good.

Great place for chicken kebabs!! I usually just do take out. The food is cooked well and taste amazing.

I have been to many Afghan restaurants in U.S, but I found the food in this restaurant to be the best. I tried Mantu, Qabeli, and Afghan style soup. They were very delicious and authentic. If you want authentic Afghan food go to this place. The service was also very good.

Love the firny and green tea. My fave is beef mantoo. Delicious!! Usually order a combo platter for dinner.

  • Nasim M.

This will be the last time i come to this place. Their food is ok, but portions and prices are completely out of place. They charge almost double the amount than other afghan places yet service a little more than half. And never order that dumb party mix they have. Its NEVER enough. We were four people last time (mind you not everyone was too hungry) and we bought the party for six special...lets just say we had to make a stop at the next pizza shop a few blocks down. And to top it all off, its the first afghan restaurant ive ever seen that charges you for bread!!! How do you charge for bread?? Ive been here over 3x and its getting worse everytime...

Great place run by nice people! Family owned business that knows how to make kababs! We come to Choopan Grill once a month usually since my parents love it here. Food is very authentic compared to most places. If you're in the area looking for a filling meal, definitely stop by! It loses a point for decor and ambiance but the food is great.

    (4)
  • Jon P.

Simply put, the food is great, but pricey. The ambiance is quite off and the waiting service wasn't very good. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my meal...and the party platter won't be enough.

i have been going to choopan for a couple years now and have really had great experiences. yet, the last time i went which was about 2 months ago it was a horrible expereience....therefore i probably will never go back. it was so busy and understaffed.....had to wait a long time to be seated (45 min). on top of that when seated the table was dirty...and the waiter came to clean it with a towel which had a DISGUSTING smelll...clearly it had been an old towel and left that dirty smell until it dried off which was very unpleasant. once i ordered......the food came out COLD. went up to the waiter and she had pretended to act confused. apparently my food had been waiting there and they were so busy to gimme it in time. the lamb was also dry. they gave me a new dish after i complained becuase i REFUSE to pay for food that is cold. i had brought a guest there for their bday so i was truly embarrased bc i talked so highly of this place. i will not be going back and i suggest staying clear on weekends and nights. lunch may be a better time to go unless they hire an appropriate amount of staff members instead of being cheap because you cant run a full restraurant with just 3 waiters.

Hands down one of the best Afghani food joint in NYC/LI area. Tastiest kebabs everrrr

  • Jackie B.

A close friend of mine was raving about this place so I decided to try Afghan food for the first time. The food is heavenly! The decorations are antique and beautiful and bring a very ethnic spunk to this restaurant. *Good for families too!

  • Asim M.

your average afghani food stop. Nothing special when it comes to the food or their service. Their customer service is like if they are doing us a favor and they make no substitutions even if it will save them money on what is being asked.

The place is decorated simply, and the tables are a little old and wobbly. Now that we've got the negatives out of the way, let's move on to the good stuff. Simply put, the food is great. Jane S. Said it best. This feels like home cooking. Not just home cooking, but really really good home cooking. Did it blow my socks off, no, I guess not, but I darn near licked the plate. I usually hate brown rice. Just something about it, can't get into it. When I saw on the menu that all of the dishes came with brown rice, i was actually kind of disappointed. When my dish came, the rice smelled and looked delicious. Long story short, not a single grain of this well seasoned delight was left on my plate at the end of the meal. The firnee was really interesting, as was the ice cream. The mashed potato turnovers (Bolani something or other... can't remember exactly) were very good, but the pumpkin variety was really addictive. Might have been the best thing I had that night. I had the beef Chapli Kebab, but next time I'll probably get a dish they feature that has home made noodles and a yogurt and chicken sauce (sorry, I'm having trouble remembering the names of all the dishes). Good meal, will go again.

  • Jane S.

If my mom were Afghani, I bet she would make food like this. All the dishes I've had were consistently yummy. Make sure to save room for dessert, because the firnee and ice cream are to die for. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because the decor is a bit too 1981 (although they appear to have recently renovated), there is a strict ban on alcohol, and some of the the waitstaff are moderately inattentive.

This is the best Afghan restaurant on Long Island. Period. The kabobs are moist and tender, the rice with carrots and raisons (kabili) is amazing and the ash is out of this world. We cater from here all the time. You won't be disappointed!

  • Iffat B.

I wasn't very impressed with the food here as I've had much better Afghan food in the city. Perhaps, it's the best in LI, but definitely not the best I've ever had in New York. I had the Chicken Tikka Kababs despite the waiter's recommendation of the Chicken Breast Kababs (which I should have gotten). The Chicken Tikka Kababs were made of dark meat which was disgusting. I could taste the fat that was still left on the meat which made me gag every time I chewed it. The white sauce they had wasn't as flavorful as I expected. Overall, if you go here I recommend ordering something with white meat rather than dark as the dark meat is disgusting!

Great authentic afghan food that has a party hall towards the back of the restaurant . Kebabs are amazing and bodijan(eggplant) is the best I have had other than grannys. The portions are smaller than I would have preferred, but thats what gets one star knocked off.

  • David C.

Anyone who ever writes a bad review about this place should never go out to eat again. The food is unbelievable and the portions are big. I recommend this place to anyone who loves great food. The spices are perfect, the meat is tender, the rice is amazing and the sauce they give you can go on anything. Will be back many more times! Their tea is great too.

  • Norman S.

my afghani friend recommended this place to me because of the good veggie dishes. he was right! the badinjan burani was great. its basically an eggplant tomato dish served with a huge nan, which seemed more like a turkish lavash. there's actually enough there to be a whole meal for one person. the bolani gandana reminded me of a chinese scallion roll. the vegetable sambosa was really great with the moist potato and veggie filling. we also had the bamia, okra with afghani rice. very tasty whole okra cooked in a tomato sauce. if you don't like oily greasy indian food then this place is probably not for you. the sauces are pretty oily. the place is decorated with afghani textiles. the one waiter is really nice but overworked by the many tables. be ready for some slow service. i'll be definitely coming back again to try their kababs though.
